How Is a Mangku Chosen?

In Balinese culture, a Mangku holds a sacred role — as a spiritual guide, ceremonial leader, and guardian of divine harmony.

The calling to become a Mangku is not one that is self-chosen. It is a divine appointment, received through sacred signs and spiritual transmissions.

The Calling

A new Mangku is often revealed through dreams or visions shown to an already practicing Mangku.
Alternatively, during a ceremonial gathering of the local traditional community, a designated medium may enter a trance to channel guidance from the Gods — asking:

“Tell me, tell us… who is next?”

This request is made to the deities of Mount Agung, Mount Batur, Mount Batukaru, and Mount Lempuyang — each considered sacred embodiments of divine energy in Bali.

The Sacred Assignments

Once chosen, each Mangku is given a unique spiritual task:

  • Temple Mangku:
Serving at large temples like Besakih, they lead ceremonies, chant mantras, offer blessings, prepare tirta (holy water), and care for the temple grounds. They hold responsibility for the spiritual wellbeing of those who come to pray.
These Mangku are not salaried; they live from the offerings and donations they receive.
  • Family Mangku:
These Mangku serve within their family’s temple, guiding their kin and extended community through rites, prayer, and spiritual care.
  • Healing Mangku (Balian):
Some Mangku are destined to become healers. Their medicine may be drawn from the natural world — sacred plants, roots, and traditional remedies — or through energy healing with their hands and spiritual channeling. Each healer is called to discover their own medicine and walk their own sacred path.

The Consequence of Resistance

For the one who is called, resisting the nomination can bring spiritual, emotional, and even physical suffering. Many experience recurring illness, misfortune, or emotional unrest — signs that intensify until the person fully surrenders to their spiritual duty.

But once the calling is accepted, a profound peace arrives. A deep sense of knowing takes root — that this is their true purpose, their destiny to fulfil and serve.
